Dmitrii Nilov, Percussion
Born in Minsk, Belarus, Dmitrii Nilov began learning music from an early age, at first majoring in piano instrumental performance. At the age of seven, he got accepted to the Special Music School of the Saint-Petersburg State Conservatoire, Russia. During the period from 1999 to his graduation in 2010, he became a laureate of a few international percussion competitions, including a Grand Prix at the Mozart Wunderkind Competition, Vienna 2006.
His collaboration with the Gartow Stiftung during his school years led to a series of concerts in Germany during the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons, including a chamber music recital at the Alte Oper Frankfurt in 2009.
In 2011 he was invited to join the Frost School of Music (University of Miami) as a scholar of the Percussion Department, from which he consequently received his Bachelor's degree in music in May 2016. At the same time, after working on two degrees simultaneously, he received a Master’s degree in music from the Saint-Petersburg State Conservatoire in May 2015.
Since his first appearance as a soloist with orchestra in 2007, he has been regularly performing with many professional orchestras, including the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra and Hartford Symphony Orchestra under the baton of maestro Carolyn Kyan.
In 2014, Dmitrii won the Frost Symphony Concerto Competition, and later performed “Concerto for marimba and strings” by Emmanuel Sejourne with the Frost Symphony Orchestra. A year later, Dmitrii won the Frost Symphony Concerto Competition yet again, and as a result, he performed Avner Dorman’s double concerto “Perfums, Spices, Toxins!” with Kiril Angelov in February 2016. Since his debut recital in New York City in October 2015 as an official Grand Art Tour Artist, Dmitrii has appeared in a number of Grand Art Tour events, including a chamber music recital during the Art Basel Festival in Miami 2015.
He has been actively participating in many international music academies, workshops, and master classes, where he
was privileged to work with great artists and composers such as Svet Stoyanov, Katarzyna Myć ka, Ivana Bilić ,
Nebojš a Jovan Zivkovic, Ney Rosauro, David Friedman, Alejandro Vinão, Hannah Lash, Martin Bresnick, David
Maslanka, Lansing McLoskey, Anders, Åstrand, Frederick Macarez, Jason Sutter, Casey Cangelosy and many
Lately, Dmitrii has given performances at such historic venues as Alte Oper Frankfurt, Laeiszhalle in Hamburg,
Great Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonia, Mariinsky Theater Concert Hall, New World Center in Miami.
His passion for exploring new repertoires and commitment to authenticity in his performances led him naturally
towards an interest in working with contemporary composers. Some of this collaboration led to a series of premiers,
such as world premier of Khaos by Rodrigo Bussad, world premier of Prelude and Chorale by Hannah Lash, US
premier of Rite by Lansing McLoskey, as well as Florida premiers of Book of Grooves by Allejandro Viñao and
double percussion concerto Spices, Perfumes, Toxins!!! by Avner Dorman.
In 2016 Dmitrii Nilov was honored to be accepted to Yale University as a scholar of the percussion department
under professor Robert Van Sice, where currently he is giving performances as a part of Yale Percussion Group.
Since 2015 Mr. Nilov has been performing internationally as a part of the “Elemental Culture” percussion project.
